Responding to World Patient Safety Day: Maternal and Child Safety, Together We Care
The World Health Organization has designated September 17th as "World Patient Safety Day" each year, inviting countries worldwide to join in promoting patient safety through various actions. This year's theme for Patient Safety Week is "Maternal and Child Safety: Together We Care." The slogan is "Patient Safety Requires Patient Participation: Enhancing Patient Voice!" On September 20th, China Medical University Hsinchu Hospital held activities as part of Patient Safety Week. Hospital President Chen Ziliang expressed the hope of increasing patient involvement in maternal and child safety and enhancing the quality of healthcare.
Secretary-General Li Bozhang delivered a speech, highlighting the hospital's special arrangements for a series of events. In the morning, there were two symposiums. Pediatrician Dr. Huang Zhuoyi shared insights on "How to Feed Babies After Childbirth." Dr. Huang pointed out the invaluable active growth factors and immune antibodies present in breast milk, aiding in a baby's healthy development and reducing the risk of illness. Breastfeeding can also accelerate postpartum weight loss for mothers, reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and save on formula costs.
Following that, Director of the Pharmacy Department, Dr. Fu Yonghui, discussed "Healthy Medicinal Foods: Taboos for Pregnant Women Regarding Medication." Dr. Fu emphasized that Chinese herbal medicines are widely accepted and easily accessible to the public. However, improper usage can be unhelpful for pregnant women. For example, there are many types of ginseng, and varieties like red ginseng and Korean ginseng can potentially reduce a mother's milk production. Folk remedies involving Chinese herbal medicines vary, and not all are suitable. Since every pregnant woman has a unique constitution, it is advisable to consult with healthcare professionals. Chinese medicine practitioners can prescribe suitable Chinese herbal remedies and recommend dietary adjustments based on the pregnant woman's clinical symptoms and pulse condition.
On September 24th, starting at 9:00 AM, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department Director Dr. Su Shengyuan and Dr. Wu Bingzhong will share essential precautions for "Pregnancy Safety" and "Delivery Safety." This aims to enhance the understanding of potential risks during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period among pregnant women and their families. It encourages patients and their families to participate in medical decision-making and practice and foster a correct understanding of patient safety.
Following this, from 10:20 AM to 11:00 AM, Yoga instructor Chen Jiayi will teach prenatal yoga using chairs. These events and sharing sessions take place at the China Medical University Hsinchu Hospital's Research Center on the fifth floor stairwell meeting room. Pregnant mothers interested in participating are welcomed to attend.
In response to National Patient Safety Week, the hospital has set up an apple tree in the lobby of the Medical Building on the first floor. They invite the public to participate by personally writing blessing cards and hanging them on the apple tree to pray for their own safety or that of their loved ones. This activity runs from now until September 29th.
